The sitter depicted half-length seated in an interior, wearing a pale suit and matching hat, signed "Laszlo F.E".and dated lower right, oil on canvas, 92cm x 81.5cm

de Laszlo was introduced to the van Tuyll van Serooskerken Family via the noble van Loon Family in 1903. The following year de Laszlo painted four portraits for Ernst Louis Leopold, Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken (1875-1959) and his wife Henriette, Baroness van Tuyll van Serooskerken-Jochems (1862-1968). Following their marriage in 1902, the couple had settled on the 'Riegersbergen' Estate near the Hague, where this extraordinary portrait was painted. The Artist also produced an impressive companion portrait of Henriette in similar attire, which de Laszlo often borrowed for exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad, which gained the young Baroness and wide reputation for her great beauty. Unfortunately, the portrait of Henriette van Tuyll was lost in the Second World War, but two smaller portraits of her have survived, one of which is offered in the following lot.
