Late 18th /early 19th century, the inverted breakfront mantel above ogee and stepped edging mouldings to a fluted frieze, with central lapis lazuli tablet bearing an applied relief carved marble figural panel depicting cavorting amorini in a roundel, within a drape hung from serpent entwined uprights, flanked by jambs with flower heads above recessed panels of trailed bellflowers, on block feet
CONDITION:
The fire surround is entirely disassembled so it is extremely difficult to say with categoric certainty that all elements are present. That said, it does appear that they are all there. The jambs are in good overall order, with just one or two minor old restorations to the fillet. The frieze and tablet also appear to be in good order, with just minor knocks and scuffs to exposed extremities and corners. The mantel also appears to be in good order. The only slight issue is with the egg-and-dart course. This part is composed of separately carved elements and two or three of them are broken and/or chipped.
NB. The chimneypiece is in the manner of work by Pietro Bossi, but contains no scagliola.
