PROVENANCE: |
Reputedly acquired by the vendor's late Father from Ronald Summerfield, Cheltenham, before 1975 |
NOTE: |
The bronze bears close comparison to a hematite hippopotamus head weight, dated to the New Kingdom, held at the Cleveland Museum of Art, (John L. Severance Fund 1992.114). Stylised hippopotamus head amulets which are also similar were produced during the Middle Kingdom -see a serpentine example held at the Art Institute of Chicago, (accession no. X218) |
