Estimate: £400 - £600
Hammer price: £900
Bidding ended. Lot has been sold.

circa 1815, of sarcophagus form, each with a gilt metal handle to a faceted domed cover, the rectangular bodies with lobed upper edges, each on four cast paw feet; decorated overall in Chinoiserie taste; one entirely original, the other with a later base and original lid,

Provenance: Longleat, Wiltshire.

The slightly larger example, height 43cm
Width 44cm

PLEASE NOTE, AS CATALOGUED, ONE OF THE SCUTTLES IS LATER MADE TO MATCH, ALTHOUGH ITS LID IS PERIOD WITH THE OTHER SCUTTLE AND COVER.

The items bear the usual very minor knocks, scuffs and dents overall consistent with age and normal use. They are also generally dirty.

The gilt decoration is rubbed and faded overall.

The cover handles differ, so at least one of them is later replaced.

The demi-lune crenellations are a little bent in places.

The lions' mask and ring handles in the later example are similar but not identical to the pair in the period scuttle. Likewise the paw feet are similar but not identical.

There is flaking to the interior of the period example.

Despite the minor detractions listed above, the scuttles remain in very presentable and usable condition.
