the terrestrial globe inscribed "Delineated from the best authorities extant exhibiting the different tracts of Captain Cook and the new discoveries made by him and other circumnavigators" and further inscribed " Sold by J. Smith, Royal Exchange, London", the celestial globe "Delined (sic) by Mr Gilpin of the Royal Society", each on a turned mahogany stand with engraved brass mounts and crossover stretchers

Height 45cm
Width 42cm

Both globes and their stands bear the usual minor scuffs, knocks and abrasions overall consistent with age and use.

The surfaces are rather faded and discoloured overall, and the varnish has 'gone off' leaving a rather yellow/green tone. The gilding on the meridian rings is rubbed.

In the terrestrial globe there are two or three splits in places, one crossing two gores of the terrestrial globe. The gores are minorly scuffed in places overall.

The celestial globe has more serious cracks and damage, consistent with impact. The cracks are over an area that is now a little misshapen, so that as the globe revolves it scuffs against the horizon ring. This damage is not insignificant and the globe might benefit from professional attention.
