Better known as a sculptor, Wood was born in Keswick, Cumbria in October 1871. Wood studied in Germany and returned to London in 1887 to work under Edouard Lanteri and Sir Thomas Brock, going on to teach at the Glasgow School of Art from 1897 to 1905. During the First World War, Wood used his skills to open the Masks for Facial Disfigurement clinic, producing specialist thin metal masks for soldiers that had suffered facial injuries. Wood was professor of sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1918-1923, with William Rothenstein as Principal.
