AN ITALIAN SCULPTED ALABASTER MODEL OF ONE OF THE MEDICI LIONS,
Note: |
A 2nd century Roman marble lion (with right forepaw raised) -originally discovered as sculpted in relief form, was according to Vacca, carved free of its background and reworked by Giovanni Sciarano (or Giovanni di Scherano Fancelli), of whom little is now known. Vacca was commissioned by the Medici to create its pair in the late 16th century, sculpting the lion from a marble column capital that had come from the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. This later example has its left forepaw raised, as here. Both lions were by 1598 placed at the Villa Medici, Rome and since 1789 have been displayed at the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence |
