Condition Report: click here
Estimate: £6,000 - £8,000
Hammer price: £12,000
Bidding ended. Lot has been sold.

circa 1835, the upholstered rectangular backrest carved with trailing foliate sides, the armrests each with an inset brass socket previously for a lectern and/or candlestand (now lacking), the backrest and arms on carved dolphin supports, above a revolving canework seat, with lappet carved underside, on four cabriole legs carved as dolphins, with concealed brass barrel castors, 86cm high x 68cm wide

The chair bears the usual minor knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.

There are slightly more scuffed areas to the toprail, arms and front seat rail.

The leather upholstered backrest has a circa 5 x 2cm missing section where the horsehair is spilling through.

There is an oval reserve at the back of the backrest which will once have held a maker's plaque -this is missing.

Each arm has a brass socket hole, previously for a reading stand or sconce. These additional fixtures are long missing.

The seat is designed to revolve on a cruciform metal fitting holding the legs. The arms of this fitting are all bent slightly upwards, so that the lower edge of the seat is a little too close to the dolphin's tails, and the seat does not revolve cleanly.  Where the metal arms are bent upwards, (albeit only slightly), the wood above the dolphins tails, integrally carved, and being fixed to the metal fitting are cleanly split across in each case. In three of them there is an old metal strengthening bracket.  there are minor chipped loosses to the feet.

Castors operate cleanly.
