Lot 606

A VICTORIAN WALNUT WARDROBE, BY GILLOWS,

Please note, buyers of this lot should be aware that it is bulky and cumbersome and that its collection will need to be properly planned for.
Note: Three cabinet makers working for Gillows bore the name James Hartley. The first was apprenticed in 1746, and the second (almost certainly related) was apprenticed in 1791. The wardrobe offered here is therefore almost certainly the work of the third James Hartley who is known to have been making furniture for the firm by October 1848.

Bidding ended. Lot has been sold.

the moulded cornice and plain frieze above two mirrored, arched doors, each with lobed knob handle, above a moulded base; the fitted interior with slides and drawers, one inscribed James Hartley 1862, in pencil to the underside, 213cm high x 138cm wide x 62cm deep

The item bears the usual minor knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use. Both sides have been lacquered at some point. This has deteriorated leaving a granular feel. There is a circa 8cm scuff at the bottom of the left side. The doors are a little sticky. Otherwise perfectly satisfactory order.
