George William Sweatman was born in Gillingham, Kent on 19th December
1870. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2Cl on December 19th 1888.
During the Second Boer War, he served on HMS Tartar as a Petty Officer
1st Class. He was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with Cape Colony
Bar.
Sweatman remained in the Royal Navy and was awarded the Long Service
Good Conduct Medal in 1905. During the Great War, he served on HMS Pembroke 1
for the entire duration. He was invalided out of the Navy with organic heart
disease in 1920.
