The sword belonged
to Joseph Gilmour, who formed the 18th Regiment of Cavalry at Titusville,
Crawford County, Pa., in September 1862.
Gilmour was
promoted to Major on November 28th 1862; however, he had a short and
unsuccessful war. On March 1st 1863, he led 200 men on a westward
reconnaissance operations towards Aldie, Virginia. He failed to follow his
orders for the operation and mistook men of the 1st Vermont Cavalry for enemy
soldiers. He turned and fled at full speed from the friendly forces; for his
actions, he was court-martialed. It is unclear if he took any further part in
the war.
