James Cullen was born in Sunderland; he served with the 3rd Bn during the Boer War. He re-joined in 1904 and served up until 1919. Soon after discharge, he joined again, serving in the occupation army in Germany.

also entitled to a 1914 Star bar Trio. His service during WW1 was marked with
misconduct; he received Field Punishment Number One in 1916.
