C&B Italia was founded in 1966 as a joint venture between Cesare Cassina and his his business partner Piero Ambrogio Busnelli. It changed its name to B&B Italia in 1972 following the departure of Cassina.
Italian architect Mario Bellini's iconic 1970 'Cameleonda' design became iconic almost as soon as it was featured in a1972 exhibition titled ‘Italy and The New Domestic Landscape’ held at MoMA in New York. A radical modular design that gave people unparalleled freedom to configure it however they desired, Bellini explained the name as being "invented by mixing two words: the first is the name of an extraordinary animal, the chameleon (camaleonte in Italian), that can adapt to the environment around it and the word onda, (wave), both these words describe the shape and function of this sofa."
