This armchair is designed in the George II picturesque fashion as popularised by William de la Cour's First Book of Ornament, 1741. Contemporary chairs of simpler design appear to have belonged to the artist Francis Hayman (d.1776) since they appear in so many of his portraits (see L. Gowing, 'Hogarth, Hayman, and the Vauxhall Decorations' Burlington Magazine, January 1953, p. 13, fig. 11).

There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. The viewing right arm has a repair where it joins the splat (repaired plug on reverse). A repair at the top (viewing right) of the splat, a repair to the (viewing right) lower loop on the splat. There is some old decayed French polish in the grain (just visible as pale specks).   The mahogany is a good colour and the seat has been recently recovered in beautiful silk-velvet. In good condition.
