Lot 75

ATTRIBUTED TO DAVID MARTIN (1737-1797) A portrait of Mrs Margaret Murray (née Callander)

seated in an interior gazing upwards, inscribed on a label on the reverse identifying the sitter and the artist as "Sir Joshua Reynolds" and with the date 1773, oil on canvas, 127cm x 102cm

Provenance: The Murray family at Polmaise Castle, Cambusbarron, Scotland, and thence by descent.

This powerful portrait was traditionally identified as a work by Sir Joshua Reynolds as indicated by the old label on the frame. Current opinion is that a full attribution to David Martin is more tenable.

On a re-lined canvas with associated re-touching.

This impressive work is in attractive country house condition and would probably benefit from a light clean.

The good giltwood frame is in good overall condition with losses and rubbing consistent with age.
