identified on the reverse as "The Scoundrel" wearing a blue cloak and a white undershirt, the reverse with an inscription suggesting the painting is possibly a "Newton" and stating that it was previously hung in "Corfe Cottage, Somerset", oil on canvas, 68cm x 56cm, in a contemporary carved giltwood frame

The back is covered in paper but the canvas apparently lined and with associated retouching. The painting presents well and is in good country house condition. The frame is damaged, there are losses consistent with age and has been later painted in gold.
