A PAIR OF LIMOGES ENAMEL PANELS

by Pierre Reymond (1513-1584), initialled and dated 'PR' 1559, one depicting a Bishop with a crozier, domed hat and a rich red cape draped around him; the other depicting a soldier in a blue tunic, sword to his waist and spear resting against him. The two panels of the same size were most likely part of a triptych and stood either side of a large central panel, possibly contained within a church altar, 15.5 x 4cm.

Literature: for similar examples see the collection of the chapel at Château d'Écouen, where Anne de Montmorency commissioned Pierre Reymond to create the Altar pieces which remain in situ today.  


Damages and losses apparent. Bent and cracked at one top corner. Losses to each panel at the edges and corners. Thin/hairline cracks also visible to both.  Please see photos.
