Provenance: Family history suggests that this chest belonged to Mary Louisa Goldney, wife of Lt Colonel Philip Goldney, of the Bengal Regiment, who was born in 1815. It was then passed down to Alice Charlotte Crofton, a grand-daughter. Who in turn passed it onto the present owners father, stating 'To John Byng-Hall- the old black and gold Indian chest, which belonged to his great-grand-mother'.

The chest and stand bear the usual minor knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.

Gilding is worn and dark in places overall.

The corners are more significantly knocked, particularly the upper left front and back of the chest, There is a restored area of lacquer to the back left corner of the cover.

Base of chest interior has three splits right across, side to side.

The upper edges of the stand which allow the chest to properly locate are loose at each end.

The interiors of the front and back of the stand also have carved and gilt detail.

The two front-to-back stretchers of the stand hinge, allowing it to fold flat for carriage.
