The coffer displays signs of wear commensurate with its age and use. The leather shows signs of wear and cracking over the entire surface, with the majority of damage and losses being to the back and sides. The leather has split significantly on the corners and around the hinges, with one hinge being detached, and the back especially where a large section has been reattached; it has also become rough and started to lift away in these areas as well as the sides. There are numerous repairs and replacements to the leather and there is obvious woodworm damage leaving holes in the leather's surface. All studwork appears to be present and correct, though it is likely that some of the studs are replacements. The iron handles and brass work are in good condition, though the lock remains locked and the top section has been prized from the lid.
The carcass of the coffer has suffered woodworm damage and there is a large split between the planks that make up the bottom of the body, the top panels also seem to have split away from each other a little. The stand is in poor condition and likely a later addition. It is missing a front section of moulding, there is a large split and broken area to the back and the wood is very rough and unfinished in places such as the front feet and side rails.
