He
served in the Royal Irish Rifles from 1881 until 1899. He retired but was
recalled to service during the Boer War, from 1900 to 1902. Hallum saw active
service in the Great War, with his rank being Captain and his unit, Royal Irish
Rifles. However, he is on the General and Special Duty roll, which states 'For
overseas service (Switzerland to the UK)'. Possibly this was in connection with
British POWs in Switzerland.
Hallum
passed away in Switzerland in 1931. The following items are included in the
grouping.
History
of the Royal Irish Rifles by Lt.Col George Brenton Laurie, RIR; Light Infantry'
sword and scabbard by Wilkinson of London, the blade inscribed with three of
Claude's initials, C H; Black leather
case containing his silver napkin ring, which is inscribed with the places he was
posted to while serving with the RIR; Leather-cased book of Hallum and Sadler
family photos; Pencil portrait in a wooden frame of a Hallum; Heavy leather
suitcase with his initials OCJH; Vintage photo of three RI soldiers; Two A4
sheets, one a copy of a marriage certificate with the signature of Claude's
wife Ethel.
