Robert Clarke was born in Little Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, in January
1873. He joined the Royal Navy as a Domestic 2nd Class in February 1892.
Clarke took part in the Boxer Rebellion, serving on HMS. Arethusa from
November 1899 to September 1900. He served in the Second Boer War off the coast
on the gunboat H.M.S. Rattler from February 1901 to May 1902.
He was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1909.
At the start of the Great War, Clarke had been promoted to officers
Steward 1st Cl. He saw service on HMS Psyche, HMS Hampshire and HMS Glasgow.
From November 1916, he served at the shore establishment Victory 1 and
was discharged in 1922.
