A VICTORIAN SRI LANKAN (CEYLON) SAPPHIRE, DIAMOND AND PEARL BROOCH/PENDANT
the fine oval-cut sapphire weighing approximately 17.41ct is encircled by surrounds of diamonds and pearls. The first inner surround of diamonds is set with twenty-four old-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 0.48ct. The second larger surround is set with fourteen cushion-cut diamonds weighing approximately 5.70ct in total. The outer surround is set with twenty-one pearls measuring between 4mm to 5mm diameter (pearls are untested and there is one pearl deficient).

The detachable pendant fitting is set with
two cushion-cut diamonds with an approximate weight of 0.20ct total and a
single pearl measuring 4mm. The total diamond weight is approximately 6.38ct.
The piece is set in yellow metal and inscribed on the reverse with " The gift of David Wilson to his daughter Mary, on the
occasion of her marriage Dec 27th 1865" , 6cm long including the pendant fitting
Accompanied by a report from "The Gem & Pearl Laboratory" stating the sapphire to be untreated.
Provenance: A gift from David Wilson (hotelier and businessman, founder of the Auckland Hotel in Calcutta), on the occasion of his daughter Mary's marriage on December 27th 1865, and thence by descent through her family to the vendor.
