This well-executed portrait requires thorough restoration.
The original canvas, which is thought to be 18th Century, has been cut out and laid onto a 19th Century stretchered canvas.
The paint is flaking with three areas of loss - to the musical score; to the bottom right; and to the right upper arm.
There is also a scratch above the sitter's head.
The frame is at least 19th Century and of good quality.
There are no obvious marks to the reverse.
