Inspector
George Rackham was born in Parham, Suffolk, in 1848. By the time his son
William was five years old, George had risen to the rank of Inspector, despite
only being thirty-three years old. By 1901 he had retired from the Metropolitan
Police.
William was
born in 1875, while the family lived in Anerley, London. He was an Office Clerk
in civilian life and joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry on the 8th of
November 1894.
During the
China War in 1900, he saw active service on HMS Esk. The Long Service Good
Conduct Medal was awarded on the 19th of December 1909. He spent the Great War
on home service; thus, these two medals are his full entitlement.
Pensioned in
1919, William passed away in 1959.
