Arthur Denton
Whittle was born in Lewisham in July 1894, the son of Gertrude and Edward. He
attended Quernmore School and Merchant Taylors’ School. He participated in
Rugby and gymnastics and was a member of the OTC.
He gained a place
at London University but opted to become a clerk with the London and Lancashire
Insurance Company. When war broke out, he joined the Middlesex Yeomanry before gaining
a commission with the Durham Light Infantry. Posted to France in October 1915,
he was wounded a few weeks later and sent home to recuperate.
He recovered and
returned to the front. While serving with 'C' Company of the 10th Bn, he was
sadly killed during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. Arthur is remembered on
the Thiepval Memorial.
