Harry Arthur
Welland was born in Hackney, London, in 1892. In civilian life, he was an
Invoice Clerk. Welland enlisted at Shaftsbury St and became a member of
the 2nd/4th London Regiment. He landed with his Bn in Egypt on the 24th of
August 1915 before fighting at Gallipoli. Renumbered 281168, Harry saw further
service on the Western Front when his Bn transferred there in April 1916.
On the 23rd
of March 1918, Harry was killed in action. He was reported as missing and a
POW; however, that wasn't the case. His body was never recovered, and he is
remembered on the Pozieres Memorial.
