William Charles Hertzberg was born in Liverpool on 9th November 1887.

His father, Charles, was born in Prussia, Germany, in 1841 but had settled in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. He worked as a Cotton Porter. William's mother, Mary, was born in Londonderry. She passed away when he was three years old. 

William joined the Royal Navy on 9th November 1895, serving until November 1907, when he joined the RFR. 

Recalled to active service in August 1914, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal with Minesweeping in 1917 onboard HMS Lingfield. The award was announced in the London Gazette on 17th April 1918, in recognition of services in mine sweeping operations between the 1st April and 31st December 1917

He left the Navy in April 1920.
