During the defence
of Singapore, Gibson was killed in action on the 26th of January 1942. Japanese
Troops landed at Endau on the east coast of Malaya and at once moved to join
their forces in the west. John was a gunner on one of the nine Vildebeest sent
to attack the Japanese ships and landing craft. Three aircraft from 36 Squadron
took part in the raid, with a small escort of Hurricanes. Enemy aircraft vastly
outnumbered the British, and sadly John was killed by Nakajima Ki-27
fighters.
He is remembered on
the Singapore Memorial.
