Born in Newport, Shropshire in 1843, William (Billy) Yale worked as a painter for Copeland from circa 1869-83, where he specialised in marine views and winter scenes. On leaving Copeland, he started his own studio as a 'Tile and Slab Decorator' in Stoke-on-Trent, buying in blanks from local potteries and firing them in his own kiln
