Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from the estate of the late Bill Jesty. Mr Jesty was the former custodian of Max Gate, Thomas Hardy's home from 1885. The wardrobe is believed to have been purchased by Bertie Stephens, the Max Gate gardener, when the piece was offered for sale by Emma Hardy after the death of her husband. The Jesty's later purchased the wardrobe for a 'moderate sum'. It is commented in Bill Jesty's obituary, in relation to Max Gate, that 'there was nothing in it that had belonged to Hardy (save, I think, one wardrobe...'
