A CHINESE EXPORT LACQUER COFFER

probably early Qing, with a rectangular lid and panels decorated in polychrome on a red ground with pagodas and other buildings in extensive river landscapes, the borders with floral sprays on a black ground, on a later ebonised stand with swept (feet) 89cm high x 92cm wide x 62cm wide.

Provenance: The collection of the late Anthony du Boulay FSA (1929-2022), acquired in 1954 for six guineas.

Wear and degradation to the surface consistent with age. A section of the lacquered surface missing directly above the brass lock plate and other losses evident at the extremities. 

According to the records of the late Anthony du Boulay this coffer was restored in 1987.
