Lot 111

A VIENNA ENAMEL SNUFF BOX

circa 1735, of cartouche shape, with gold mounts, decorated in polychrome with cupids playing amidst baskets and swags of flowers, enclosed by Berainesque borders, the interior similarly decorated, 7.5m wide

The style and execution of the decoration may indicate the work of Ignaz Bottengruber. The attribution to Vienna is based on comparison with porcelain examples of the same period and the superb quality and execution of the present piece.

Provenance: Christie’s Geneva, 26th April 1978, lot 244.
