A RARE LATE 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY WHITE METAL NUTMEG GRATER

possibly by John Clifton or John Clare I, of teardrop form, with ‘stand away’ hinges, the top and rear covers engraved with a rose and a tulip respectively, makers mark IC only, with incised matching Roman numerals to covers and body and with engraved owner’s initials ‘MP’, 4cm x 3.5cm x 2.5cm high, weight 26.9 grams, contained in original brown shagreen fitted case

This grater is very clean and only bears a makers mark.


The item has been catalogued as white metal since it is not hallmarked and has not been tested as silver.


There is a short split to the tip of base cover (the cover engraved MP to side). This cover does not sit flush and is slightly dented.

The top cover is slightly bowed and does not sit flush 

The case is slightly worn.
