Henry Herbert was born in Kingston, London, in 1838. He attested on the 11th of September 1860, aged 22, giving his occupation as Labourer.

2-24th Foot in Mauritius for five years and five months, East Indies for seven
years and seven months, in Gibraltar for seven months, a period of four months
at home and one year eleven months in South Africa.
Discharged at
Secunderabad, India, on the 24th of January 1881 after 21 years and 117 days of
service. He excelled as a soldier, had never been tried by district court
martial and was in possession of the LSGC medal.
