John Perry was
born in Shankhill, Belfast, Antrim, in 1873. A Hammerman by trade, he attested
on the 31st of August 1914 in Dumfries. He had previously served seven years
with the Colours and five years with the reserves, enlisting on the 13th of
December 1891.
There seems to
be some confusion as to whether or not he was discharged in 1914 due to not
being physically fit enough. However, the medals were issued, and a medal index
card stating he landed in France with the 3rd Bn on the 27th of December 1914
exists. Other evidence suggests he was discharged in 1919.
