Frank William Gilham was born in Bradfield, Witts, on the 25th of September 1878. He joined the Royal Navy on his 20th birthday, signing on as a Stoker 2nd Class.
He served on HMS Pearl during the Boer War. Upon discharge, he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve. When the Great War broke out, he was recalled, serving on HMS Amphitrite, HMS Carnarvon, HMS Ariadne and HMS Diana.
He survived the war and was discharged in 1919.
