Henry Gilson was born in Birchanger, Dunmow, Essex, in 1873. He attested on the 27th of December 1894, giving his occupation as Labourer.

He served in India
from the 20th of October 1896 until the 1st of May 1907. During that time, he
saw service on the frontier and was awarded the Indian General Service Medal
with two clasps.
He often seems to
have been in trouble, forfeiting pay and GC badges. He was discharged for
misconduct on the 29th of September 1908.
