AFTER WILLIAM MOSSMAN (1793-1851), ‘THE WRESTLERS’

after the Antique original, plaster, 87cm high x 115cm long x 65cm wide, bears impressed signature and dated 1843

Note: The original classical marble group was first discovered in 1583 in Rome, near Porta S. Giovanni. It was discovered together with the Niobe Group. Both were subsequently purchased by Cardinal Ferdinand de Medici and sent to Florence in August 1677.

There are chips and losses around the bottom edge of the base. Grazing and light surface scratching apparent to the figures. A hairline crack is evident to the raised arm. Restorations apparent, it appears the top wrestlers head has been knocked off and restored. Further evidence of re-plastering to his buttocks and the lower wrestler left arm. Further retouching evident.
