A MALTESE WALNUT AND MARQUETRY BUREAU CABINET

mid-18th century, the upper part with arched and bevelled glazed panelled doors enclosing shelves,
the centre with a sloping front inlaid with the armorial of the Knights of Malta, enclosing a fitted interior
and incorporating a sloping panel revealing a well, with three long exterior drawers, on ebonised bun feet, 217cm high x 104cm wide

Provenance: Bt. in Malta circa 1926, and thence by inheritance

Note: According to his notes Anthony du Boulay corresponded with The Noble JM De Conti Sant Manduci regarding the armorials.

This rare and unique piece is in good country house condition. There is some wear and surface marks consistent with age and use. There is lifting and splitting to the veneer and small pieces missing. The finials at the top have possibly been restored. The glass doors are likely a later replacement. The handles and escutcheons are later, two escutcheons are missing. There are some signs of old worm (most significantly to the feet, of which a couple have been restored, and one detaches when the base is moved).
