''These are to certify that James Norgrove served as a Private Marine on board his Majesty’s Ship Victory under my command from the 18th April 1803 to the 21st day of October 1805, that he was killed in action off Trafalgar on that day, and that he is entitled to a share prize money for all captures made by the said ship during that time. Given under my hand on board this ship this 25th day of December 1805’’
Signed TM Hardy Captain and given his red wax seal.
The lower half comprises a letter written to the Revd Daniel Lysons confirming the arrangement and details of the dead man’s possessions. The letter ends
“I have recommended his poor mother to the Patriotic Fund’’.
