MANNER OF CLAUDE GELLEE, CALLED LE LORRAIN (1600-1682) 'Seaport at Ostia with the Villa Medici'
signed, oil on canvas, 101.5cm x 134.5cm
Provenance: The Atkinson Family, Temple Sowerby, Cumbria and subsequently purchased by the present
vendor’s father from Duke’s 4th March 1993, lot 144, hammer £4,400.
Note: According to Professor Michael Kitson, late of the Courtauld Institute of Art, this work is of particular interest since it appears to have been in this country since the 17th Century, making it an extremely early copy dating to the lifetime of Claude, or shortly after his death.
