Tom Luzny was a Canadian
painter and muralist. Born and educated in Manitoba, Luzny served with the Canadian
infantry in Italy and Normandy during WWII, before, late in the war, becoming a
cartoonist for the Canadian Army newspaper 'The Maple Leaf'. It was in the
February 1946 issue of that paper that Luzny, a "wild-eyed young man of
22" announced he was planning to take up a "promising career as a
muralist" in England after his discharge. He studied under Frank Brangwyn
and, after his training, spent two years on a series of nine murals entitled
'War and Peace' which were unveiled in the London offices of the Canadian
Department of Veterans Affairs in 1953, before being transferred first to the
Canadian War Museum and latterly to the Canadian Museum of Civilisation. In
1957 Luzny undertook a commission to paint large murals for the Cunard
Liner 'Sylvania'.
