Alexander Hawtrey was born on the 10th of October 1819, the son of the Rev. Charles Sleech and Harriett Hawtrey. He was educated at Eton School. On the 24th of April 1842, he was made a Cornet in the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers.
He was gazetted a Lieutenant on the 31st of May 1844; he fought in the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846. He saw active service in the Punjab Campaign and fought at the battles of Chillianwallah in January 1848 and Gujerat in February 1849.
It seems he was wounded and laid out on the field after the battle of Chillianwallah. When he passed away in Ostend, Belgium, on the 15th of February 1857, newspaper reports stated he had been suffering from the effects of exposure for several years.
