the backplate stamped PJ Malherbe & Cie / A Liege, this shows the rifle was made in Liege, Belgium, under contract by the Russians, the lock is stamped 944 which matches the number on the butt plate ‘944’ along with the Russian Imperial Eagle of Tsar Nicholas I, an excellent example and highly collectable
