A LARGE TURKISH CARPET

18th/19th century, the large central medallion containing stylised flowerheads and geometric designs within a conforming border, the madder ground with scattered stylised flowerheads in blue and with spandrels on an ivory and madder ground, with a blue principal border containing a meandering vine enclosed by multiple guard stripes, 500cm x 645cm

Provenance: This carpet appears in a watercolour of The Great Hall at Sandford Orcas painted by Hubert J. Medlycott in 1885.

The carpet has losses to the edges, holes in several areas, and is in a threadbare state commensurate with age and condition . It is in a very faded condition.

One corner has been cut off our and squared to fit a previous room, it has been bound/ repaired at the edges.

The fringing to one edge and half of another is missing and it has been bound later to secure the threads.

There are two large holes near one far edge of a corner in particular and smaller holes throughout including those to the centre.
