Note: The painting was authenticated as a work by Jan de Bray of Harlem around 1980 by Bruyn Kops of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, and Christopher Brown of the National Gallery, London. Previously it had been attributed to Rembrandt Van Rijn.

The chamfered panel behind glass with scattered retouching evident on the girl's face, on her hand and along the line of a vertical crack through the panel which passes approximately 2cm to the left of the girl's left eye.

Inspection of the reverse of the chamfered panel indicates a repaired split. There are various old labels including one for Sotheby & Co. The painting was previously attributed to Rembrandt.

The giltwood frame is in attractive country house condition with some losses and damage to gilding consistent with age.
