ENGLISH SCHOOL, 18th century A portrait of a gentleman

wearing a blue coat and a white stock, oval, pastel, 30cm x 25cm, retaining the original giltwood and gesso frame with a beaded inner border

Provenance: According to a label on the reverse this pastel portrait was in the Drawing Room at Ven House and was shown there in a photograph of circa 1890. It came to Sandford Orcas in 1929. It possibly depicts Thomas Hutchings Medlycott, the father of Sir William Coles Medlycott, the first Baronet.

In good country house condition but under a strong light the composition appears to have been rubbed in places. 

In what appears to be the original frame and is good overall country house condition with losses and rubbing to the gilt consistent with age.
