A LARGE CHARLES I LEATHER "BOMBARD" OR BLACKJACK

of typical form, the front with a crown flanked by “CR” and with the date “1646” below, the base with an old label in ink inscribed “HH” possibly indicating that the piece was acquired by Hubert Hutchings for Sandford Orcas during his tenure, 55.5cm high x 27cm wide (maximum) x 17cm across the neck

In good condition with craquelure patterning throughout and nicks around the neck commensurate with age.

This bombard has been in the house since the 1880’s which does not preclude it being an antiquarian object.

 We cannot say with certainty that the decoration of the crown and date have been added at a later date.
