A PAIR OF GERMAN STAINED GLASS PORTRAIT ROUNDELS

dated 1531, each painted en grisaille with profile portraits of a lady and a gentleman, within a pale amber glass border with inscriptions (apparently misplaced) which should read “ Christof Kreszae der eltter ano: dmi 1531" and "Ellena Christof Kreissin ein geborne Dvecherin 1531", 28cm diameter

Note: According to family notes, the man and woman depicted are a Nuremberg merchant and his wife and it is suggested that they were made to commemorate their marriage in 1531.

Estimate: £1,000 - £2,000
Bidding ended. Lot is unsold.

In historic country house condition consistent with age and the materials employed.

In good overall condition but the male portrait panel is extensively cracked and with consequent repairs. According to note the roundel of the gentleman was repaired and re-leaded in 1979.

Both are scratched and cracked in areas, with faded enamels commensurate with age.

The lady has a crack across her name and across lettering on another outer panel.

The leading on the gentleman is much heavier.

There are cracks across his hat in two places, across the face, hair and lip and across the neck of his armour. They do not affect the image of the merchant which is still vibrant and strong.

There are also small cracks across his name and the date on the outer panels.
