A CHINESE REVERSE PAINTING ON GLASS

18th century, depicting an elegant couple seated beneath a tree with an extensive river landscape beyond, in a later giltwood and black lacquer frame decorated with foliage in gilt within a beaded and leaf-carved border, 29.5cm x 45.5cm (the glass is cracked)

Provenance: Bt. Duke’s, 26th October 1995, Lot 500. The collection of the late Anthony du Boulay FSA (1929-2022).

There is a large arcing crack that runs through the left hand tree, in some places you can see newsprint that has been transposed onto the glass from when it has previously been used as a backing paper, various other losses to the decoration as evident in the images, frame with losses.
